How was Wilhelm Ostwald awarded the Noble Prize?

German chemist and philosopher Friedrich Wilhelm Ostwald was of Baltic descent. He was awarded the Noble Prize in 1909 for his contributions to the field of “catalysis and for his studies of the fundamental principles governing chemical equilibria and rates of reaction.
