How was Walter Norman Haworth awarded the Noble Prize?Sir Walter Norman Haworth was a groundbreaking British chemist who worked at the University of Birmingham. He is best known for his seminal research on ascorbic acid (vitamin C). He received the 1937 Nobel Prize in Chemistry “for his investigations on carbohydrates and vitamin C.” The prize was shared with Swiss chemist Paul Karrer for his work on other vitamins.

Haworth determined the precise structures of several sugars and is known among organic chemists for the Haworth projection, which translates complex three-dimensional sugar structures into simple two-dimensional graphical representations.
