How was Sir William Ramsay awarded the Noble Prize?

He began studying gases after hearing a lecture by Lord Rayleigh, which led to his discovery of noble gases. Rayleigh and Ramsay were awarded the physics and chemistry Nobel Prizes in the same year for their cooperation.
