How was Peter Debye awarded the Noble Prize?

Physical scientist and Nobel laureate in chemistry Peter Joseph William Debye was of Dutch-American descent. In 1936, Petrus (Peter) Debye, who was then a resident of Berlin, won the first Nobel Prize for Chemistry for his work with X-ray diffraction. Debye instead focused on gases, which produce less distinct diffraction patterns, rather than crystals.
