How was Friedrich Bergius awarded the Noble Prize?

German scientist Friedrich Karl Rudolf Bergius is credited with inventing the Bergius process of producing coal into synthetic fuel. In 1931, he received the Nobel Prize in Chemistry for his contributions to the invention and development of chemical high-pressure methods.
