How was Frédéric Joliot awarded the Noble Prize?A lecturer at the Paris Faculty of Science, Frédéric Joliot worked with his wife on research on the structure of the atom, particularly on the projection, or recoil, of nuclei that had been struck by other particles, which was an essential step in James Chadwick’s 1932 discovery of the neutron. They won the Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 1935 for their discovery of induced radioactivity, which was caused by the creation of transmutable radioisotopes by nuclear transformation after bombarding stable nuclides such as boron, magnesium, and aluminum with alpha particles.
