How was Adolf Friedrich Johann Butenandt awarded the Noble Prize?
The German biochemist Adolf Friedrich Johann Butenandt was born. His “work on sex hormones” earned him the Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 1939. By government policy, he initially turned down the award; however, in 1949, he accepted it. He was employed as a professor at the Chemisches Institut in Danzig following World War II. He kept working on hormones, isolating progesterone in 1934 and testosterone the following year. The research findings and Leopold Ruika’s development of steroids were deemed important enough by the Nobel Committee to be later awarded in 1939.
