How was Fritz Pregl awarded the Noble Prize?

Fritz Pregl was an Austrian-Slovene chemist and physician with a background speaking Slovene and German. For his important contributions to quantitative organic microanalysis, including the development of the combustion train technique for elemental analysis, he won the Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 1923.
