How was Walther Hermann Nernst awarded the Noble Prize?

Walther Hermann Nernst’s work on electrochemical thermodynamics won his the 1920 Nobel Prize in Chemistry. Although the prize was given for the third law of thermodynamics, his work in electrochemistry was undoubtedly the most important in terms of practical terms.
