The goddess temple referenced in documents from the 6th to the 9th century CE is located in the core of the ancient temple city of Madurai. This temple is one of the 275 Shiva temples known as the Paadal Petra Sthalams, which are praised in Tamil Saiva Nayanar poetry from the sixth to ninth centuries CE.
